Mediums have existed for hundreds of years and modern mediums have gifts much like those back in the 18th century. The art of mediumship involves connecting with a spirit from another life and channelling with this entity.
Mediums may have different gifts such as clairvoyance, clairaudience or clairsentience (the gift of seeing, hearing or sensing an impression of a spirit who wishes to communicate with the physical world.) Depending on the medium, they will conduct the reading based on the gift that they have.

Mediums are able to work either by channelling the individual completely (i.e. the spirit takes over the body in a controlled environment) or by receiving messages which are communicated to the person having the reading in a fully awakened state, which is the preferred methods for readings. The communication might involve anything from a reassuring message from a passed family member to a connection with a spirit guide who might be sending a message from the future or advice for the present.
The medium might also use spirit writing or even reiki to help convey energies and communicate messages. Many mediums have their own techniques based on their individual gifts which have probably been present since they were a child.
